1.2 - Danang - The Eastern Gateway of the East- West Economic Corridor
Danang Port is the Eastern Gateway to the EWEC, acting as the access point for the Pacific Ocean of the virtually untapped hinterland of Laos, Northeast Thailand, Myanmar and Central Vietnam.

The EWEC is one of the five economic corridors initiated by ASEAN and sponsored by the Asian Development Bank and Japan to link the GMS and the Indian Ganges River economic areas, shortening the distance and reducing costs for the development of economic exchanges between the nations in the Pacific and Indian Ocean.
The EWEC is a road link, approximately 1,450km in length, which runs across 13 provinces of four countries of the Greater Mekong Sub-Region (Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam). The road network from Danang Port to the Northeast Thailand provinces and the second bridge over the Mekong River, completed in 2006, have facilitated the land transportation of passengers and cargoes.

The objectives of EWEC:
· Accelerate regional cooperation
· Improve living standards of local people
· Improve socio-economic conditions in the region
· Provide better access to raw materials, capital, technology and labour
· Facilitate cross-border trade
· Extend the market for services in the region
· Diversify economic activities and exports
· Accelerate tourism development

Danang's seaport location and gateway role within the EWEC, coupled with the ongoing liberalization of trade and investment in the ASEAN region, means that Danang will come to play an increasingly strategic role in the development of the Key Economic Zone of Central Vietnam.
